Afghanistan is a landlocked and mountainous country in South-Central Asia, with plains in the north and southwest. Large parts of the country are dry, and fresh water supplies are limited. Afghanistan has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The country is frequently subject to minor earthquakes, mainly in the northeast of Hindu Kush mountain areas.
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan border Afghanistan to the north, Iran to the west, Pakistan to the south and China to the east.
Water irrigation provides water for commercial activities in villages. The pipes deliver water to local farms, which help them to grow crops, vegetables and fruits. The farmers contribute to the local economy through freshly grown food and commodities like cotton.
A water irrigation is powered by a motor where the boring is done 150-160 meters in the ground and water is pumped out through a 9” tube through a diesel-powered motor. The motor pulls water out of the ground and travels through a man-made river that has several diversions leading towards farms from where farmers are able to irrigate their farms. In addition to providing water to the farms, it also provides approx. 1,000 families with clean drinking water as well as clean water to do washing, bathing and all other chores that require clean water. This irrigation system costs $15,000.00. One irrigation system provides water for approximately 100 years which is a life changer to those farms and villagers leaving in the vicinity of an irrigation system.
Impact of an Irrigation Scheme for the locals
Giving people the means to provide for themselves is one of the best ways to empower an individual. The provision of an irrigation channel would generate crops which can be sold for income, food for the families as well as water for their livestock. The difference such a project would make to the lives of these families is immeasurable.
The estimated costing of each 16” hand pump is approx. $3,500 and 18” hand pump is approx. $5,000.
Hand pumps have deep boring of 150 meters underground to get to the fresh water reserves. They provide at least 20 years of fresh water to the community. Each hand pump gives water to 500 – 700 families (7,600 individuals) in surrounding areas.
Impact of Water Handpumps
The benefits of the water handpump and the impact it has on the poor families is astounding. The poor women and children would no longer need to walk for hours to get portable water, the number of children suffering from common water borne diseases reduces and the general hygiene of the families tremendously improves.
